The Process

After all registration is complete we will view our observation hive and watch 100% of the activity of a real bee hive safely without suits. We will discuss the castes of bees and their role in the hive.  We will spend time observing and learning how their numbers effect their behavior and actions.

Next, it is assiging suits, gloves, ankle bands, and bluetooth camera shutters (if desired). We’ll head to our staging area where we will discuss types of hives, hive components, package bees, nucleus colonies, queen rearing, common pitfalls. We will then review tools, bee yard safety protocols, assign buddies, prepare phones for pictures, and suit up.

At your dedicated hive you will find a lit smoker, hive tool, and bee brush. Your guide will mount your phone above your hive so you can take selfies without taking your gloves off .

Into The Hive!

When the group is ready, your instructor will guide you in opening your first hive!, and teach you when to use your smoker, hive tool, and brush. The group will also pause for students to take pictures as we explore our hives together. You will learn about how honey bees keep eggs, larva, and pupae on frames, hive formations, burr comb, and see all the components of the hive in use. Don’t worry, your suit has you covered. When time is up we will reassemble hives and head back to staging area.

All information provided in this course is available on our website and will be provided via email links after class. However, there is no substitue for the experience of entering a real bee hive.
